That line effect can be achieved even with dashes with sidebearings, by adding emdash-to-emdash kerning to close the gap.3 -
Re: En/Em dash length for condensed style font
Bringhurst says the hyphen is now standardized to a quarter em, for what that's worth. It seems clear to me that with condensed or expanded designs, such an em-based standard isn't going to work. But…2
